— THE CYCLE & THE SOUL —
THE CYCLE
The process of a soul's death and rebirth into a new physical body — reincarnation. The Cycle is managed and controlled by the Soul Sphere, which was administered first by the Elder Quorum and later by agents of the Census Agency.
CYCLECON
Short for Cycle Condition. A measurement of the current health of the Soul Sphere, ranging from one to four, with four being the least healthy. A high CycleCon signals an imminent transgression from a Demonic entity.
THE FUGUE
The memory block — a state of amnesia — instilled by the Soul Census upon reincarnated souls. It prevents humans from remembering their former lives.
THE PULL
A portal opened by the Soul Sphere to guide disincarnate spirits through it and back to the Spirit Realm. It is most often reported as a white light that appears after physical death. Spirits sometimes resist the Pull and end up roaming the Earth; helping these troubled souls return to the Spirit Realm is part of the Census Agency's doctrine.
REINCARNATE
When a living creature is born into the physical world, a soul from the Spirit World melds with its body. A Reincarnate is a newly reincarnated soul.
DISINCARNATE
A disembodied soul, usually residing in the Spirit Realm. Disincarnates sometimes roam the physical planes as “ghosts.”
DISINCARNUT
A soul stuck between the ethereal and physical planes. Often confused, they can descend into insanity — striking fear and injury into those around them. Census Agents are dispatched to communicate with these souls and “talk” them into surrendering to the Pull. When diplomacy fails, cruder methods such as exorcism must be employed.
CENSUS TALLY
The count of remaining troubled souls roaming the Earth as a result of the Rapture. The count is displayed in Roman numerals on the Soul Census monolith in the Atrium.
CLOG
Cycle Locking Obstruction of Geotransmigration. An event triggered by the transgression of a Demonic entity. Occasionally, Demons from Tartarus will masquerade as Reincarnates and take over the physical body of a newborn.
SOUL TWINNING
The act of inhabiting more than one body at a time, thereby living multiple lives at once. Only advanced souls possess this ability. Through twinning, a soul can accelerate its karmic progression.
HARVEST
A grouping of mid-level souls reincarnated together to advance themselves and humanity. They are given limited access to soul-memory in order to accomplish their individual missions — typically missions on Earth with significant impact on humanity.
CIRCLE
A circle of spirits typically born at the same time, like siblings in a family. They reincarnate together through different lives within the same family or circle of friends on Earth.
— THE SOUL SPHERE —
SOUL SPHERE
An invisible moon created by the Elder Quorum that once orbited the Earth. It manages and controls the reincarnation process — the Cycle — of all spirits and beings on Earth. It crashed to Earth during the event known as the Rapture.
THE ATRIUM
The main nerve center of the entire Soul Sphere complex. The Soul Census monolith is housed here.
SOUL CENSUS
An ancient monolith inside the Soul Sphere, created by the Elder Quorum of spirits on the instruction of the Presence. It monitors and displays the progression of souls as they reincarnate on Earth.
THE REFLECTION ROOM
A room in the Soul Sphere where one can view a replay of their past lives. All potential recruits are brought here to review their life history and determine their viability as Census Agents.
WINDOW ROOM
A chamber in the Soul Sphere capable of viewing every physical being's current life as it happens. It was unfortunately destroyed during the Rapture.
WELL OF SOULS
A chamber in the Soul Sphere containing a pool of sap fed by the Sacred Tree. The pool is used to enchant weapons and to baptize new Census Agents. It is said this pool flows into the River Styx of Tartarus itself.
THE LINE
The border between Tartarus and Earth. It is visible from certain areas within the Soul Sphere.
THE SOURCE
The womb of the Presence, in which all new souls are born.
THE CARETAKER
The lone soul that manages the Soul Sphere from the ethereal plane. The Elder Quorum periodically elects a new individual to assume this role. This being is frequently contacted by Census to exchange intelligence between the Agency and the Spirit World.
— AGENCY EQUIPMENT —
CHARMER
The name given to the device used by Census Agents to exorcise demons. It amplifies the Earth's natural 7 Hz frequency, which “loosens” the grip between body and soul.
OUIJA TRANSPONDER
A device that creates a bridge into other planar realms. It has been used only on rare occasions, when beings from the Exodus must be called to our Earthly plane to assist in dealing with a difficult CLOG event — such as a Rattler incursion.
OUIJA BOARDER
A large Ouija Transponder capable of opening a bridge to multiple planar realms at once. It would be employed only under extreme circumstances, when a significant number of extra-planar reinforcements are needed. Only two Boarders exist — one at Census, and one at a secret location.
TRANSFERENCE RING
A Spirit Manifestation used by souls to travel within the Spirit Realm.
— THE SPIRIT REALM —
THE PRESENCE
The universal being felt by all spirits in the Spirit Realm.
SPIRIT GUIDES
High-level souls in the Spirit Realm who teach and guide younger souls as they progress through their incarnations on Earth. Spirit Guides receive their instruction primarily from the Spirit Council; some very high-level guides also receive instruction from the Elder Quorum.
— KNOWN ADVERSARIES —
THE BLACK SUN
A highly secretive organization within the German Nazi Party, heavily involved in the occult. It is believed to possess various ethereal technologies obtained through contact with dark forces from Tartarus. Its exact goals and strength are not yet known, but Census is keen to gather further intelligence on this potential adversary.
