AUGUST 1939. The freighter came in from the North Atlantic with her running lights dark and every man aboard dead. The harbormaster logged her a ghost ship. The night watch at Pier 12 logged her something worse. What walked down her gangway had the shape of a dockworker killed three days before and none of his warmth: pale skin, red eyes, black talons, and a grip that tore a mooring bollard clean out of the pier. It did not speak. It pressed — images, intent, the sensation of being watched from inside your own skull. Within six hours it had shed its first worms, and the night watch was no longer entirely human. Agent Maddock's team reached Philadelphia Harbor carrying the one weapon that mattered — a blade baptized in the Well of Souls — and one hard rule: do not let it seed. They cornered the progenitor in the shipyard drydock at first light. Standard arms did nothing — ball and shot came off it like rain off a brass rail. The blessed blade took its head on the second swing, and the worm-line died with it. Eight men came home; the freighter's crew did not. Her manifest listed no cargo and no port of origin, and by September the harbormaster's office had burned its records to the waterline. Some files don't want to be kept. This one got sealed anyway.
