— INCIDENT SUMMARY — CLASSIFIED —
SEPTEMBER 1939. Maggio's had already survived the impossible. Through thirteen years of Prohibition the joint kept pouring behind a firehouse doorbell, a peephole rigged through the neighboring cigar store, and a chute that dropped the liquor into the cellar ahead of any raid; in 1931 the feds came over the transom anyway, tipped by a competitor, and the tavern outlived them too. The man behind the stick that night was the one who'd built those defenses — the elder Maggio, proprietor, pouring legally now, alone at closing. What came up the cellar chute was a Rattler. It had been a man once — a dockhand the Philadelphia progenitor's worms took in the first hours of the breach — but the harbor sweep missed him, and three weeks north the man was gone entirely, leaving only what had grown under his skin: pale gray-white flesh, eyes gone red, black talons where his hands had been. It had no use for the front door; it took the chute — the one entrance the room never thought to defend. The elder Maggio went down between the casks, and the thing that killed him left no wound a coroner could put a name to — only white worms in the dark it left behind. His son — who keeps the bar today — found him at opening. Census took the case at dawn, put a Well-baptized blade in the cellar, and burned the host where it stood among the casks, worms and all. The tavern reopened that evening. The chalk board still reads the same beers. Our advice is that the son never learns what his father died keeping out — though we note he has begun locking the cellar door.
— FIELD NOTES & PROTOCOL —
◇ A seeded host is not the progenitor — it is slower, quieter, and easier to dismiss as a vagrant
◇ Sweep every worm-line twice — one missed host can walk a hundred miles before it feeds
◇ Entity-caused homicides are closed as robbery — the local record is corrected by Census field staff
◇ A room's oldest defense can be its newest breach — the chute that served Prohibition served the worm
