— INCIDENT SUMMARY — CLASSIFIED —
JUNE 1939. The Silver Bell was the hottest room in Harlem — until the heat turned out to be something else. On the night of the 17th the house tenor man hit a figure he'd never played before, a phrase the sheet music swore was impossible, and the room answered like it had been waiting years for somebody to ask. Thirty-one patrons began to hum the same note, then speak it, in a tongue nobody living had carried since before the War. Waiters found themselves pouring drinks for seats that had been empty a beat earlier. Two showgirls walked out the alley door and turned up in the coatroom without ever crossing the street. The intruder was a Soul Echo — a vocalist murdered in that very room in 1931, still tied to the bandstand by an unfinished song. She'd been riding the house music ever since, patient and half-asleep, and the tenor man's impossible phrase finally woke her. She wasn't hostile. She just meant to finish the set. Agent Maddock's judgment that night is the only reason there's a file instead of a graveyard: no exorcism — a standard one would have scattered thirty-one innocent souls right along with hers. So the team did the unthinkable and let the band play. At 1:40 a.m. the Echo took the stage, sang the last eight bars of her own unfinished number, and let go. Every patron walked out on their own two feet. The tenor man never played that phrase again — far as we can determine, he no longer can.
— FIELD NOTES & PROTOCOL —

◇ Unrecorded musical figures can open latent channels — flag impossible phrases to Archives
◇ Case closed 6/19/1939; the Silver Bell reopened under new management and full Census watch
